About this Location
The Monastery of Batalha, also known as the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, was built in the 14th century in Portugal. It was commissioned by King John I to celebrate the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The construction lasted for several decades and combined elements of Gothic and Manueline styles.
This magnificent monastery features notable architectural highlights such as the Royal Cloister, an impressive example of Gothic artistry, and the Main Chapel, adorned with stunning stained glass windows and a ribbed vaulted ceiling. The Founder's Chapel and Imperfect Chapels remain unfinished, adding an intriguing aspect to its design. Today, the Monastery of Batalha is a UNESCO World Heritage site, captivating visitors with its rich history, remarkable craftsmanship, and cultural significance.
